Before crossing an open area, pause and look for patrol routes, elevated positions and available cover. Avoid treating every encounter as a direct firefight: the safest route may be a longer route that keeps you out of sight.
Use optics to assess distant threats and choose engagements deliberately. Keep track of ammunition and equipment, and retreat to cover when a position becomes unsafe. Mission objectives often reward understanding the environment rather than rushing forward.
